Upside-down, The Good Newsletter 2020 - Week 17

The weekly interactive newsletter sent out by Plukrijp to its members

For people living NOW the school of life

For YOU to send all your good news to

upside down = instead of announcing what we plan to do
(& most often find out we do not need to do), we relate what we really did

Building communities of trust is fundamental to healing our collective wound. At Plukrijp, we offer spaces of transparency and solidarity. The community allows people to encounter each other in truth and so develop trust.
We do the garden for YOU
Plukrijp functions on your frequent visits & harvests. Take along for friends & neighbours, this way we recreate real networks between us all, breaking down the illusory restrictions that now still separate many of us from our fellow man = UBUNTU.

What you can harvest now:

rhubarb, sweet peas, pakchoy, salads, celery, chards, chives, rucola, fresh herbs for taste & medicine.

This week @ Plukrijp
We did:
A garden week, abundant & generous

We cleaned out the salads & other greens from the closed tunnels since they went to seed. In the open spaces we planted low fine beans. We also recuperated lots of self-seeded tomatoes.

We finally mowed the lawn. Cutting grass in spring too early, before it has become strong, is a mistake many people make. Tender, wet, long grass cut short damaged easily.

We received 15 big bales of old hay
from Polle, our tractor friend. Thanks! They will come in handy to fill in the roads at Hei & in the tunnels. Old hay resembles straw a lot, except for the grass seeds. But straw tends to spread cereals while old hay usually decays before it can seed itself. Anyhow, as they say, never look a given horse in the mouth.

At Hei we scratched every line between pumpkins, leeks, plukpots, .... so the soil could breathe in the small rainfall. Six lines of carrots were seeded between the onions.
Between the open tunnels the rhubarb is growing extra hard, so we scratched around it, hoping no new weeds will come. The blueberries are promising to give nice harvest too!
Anthony fixed many tools, including the exploded tire of the red trailer. Chris' tire shop was closed by the police under the excuse that this was not an "essential" business. The government made him pay his vat-taxes inn advance while forbidding him to earn money. Strange economics nowadays!
We potted lots of chards, tomatoes, cabbages & watered them. We expect to give away many pots this summer to all the "new"(locked-down) gardeners having discovered the soil beneath their lawns.

The horse-manure & forest leave-compost & soil was put on the compost heap. We now look forward to 200m³ of ripe compost in autumn 2020/spring 2021.
Potatoes were planted on the middle raised bed of tunnel 5. We expect more local "harvesters" this year & have redirected our planning towards more "basic"(&known) crops: onions, leeks, potatoes, carrots, string beans, parsnip & chard (+??).

Most Walcherse cauliflower now have "given", an enormous harvest of very big heads. We took away the remaining leaves & hope that from the stems new leaves will grow. A few years ago the stems were so strong they gave us 3 harvests over the next 2 years!
Pipa helped the melon & cucumber plants find their way to heaven. They thank her !

We weeded tunnel 5 side beds, finding beautiful lines of carrots & leeks & onions growing well though a bit dry.

Anthony repaired the leaks in the watering lines. Our material was not new when we received it & has not gotten younger over the years, but we manage & improvise.

We received plenty of big tomato plants from Hugo. You really saved our early planting!

At Hei the space directly left, under the apple trees, was cleaned & scratched & is waiting for pumpkin plants (&some rain).

Martine cleaned up the leftovers of the 2019 carrots/parsnips/potatoes. It was a very good year !

Shel Silverstein and Dr hook & the medicine show, a hilarious '70s evening full of belly laughter & foot tapping. Where have all these good guys gone? Compared to "music"now, they seem super-human & at the same time very humble. Dr John insisted: yagottadancetoit !

The documentary made by Michael Moores “Planet ot the Humans”. A must to see! You will not be able to handle the same way after having watch this documentary. We were deep shocked and stayed silent for a while… “green energy” is a big lie!

Michael Moore Presents: Planet of the Humans | Full Documentary | Directed by Jeff Gibbs
Michael Moore presents Planet of the Humans, a documentary that dares to say what no one else will this Earth Day — that we are losing the battle to stop climate change on planet earth because we are following leaders who have taken us down the wrong road — selling out the green movement to wealthy interests and corporate America. This film is the wake-up call to the reality we are afraid to face: that in the midst of a human-caused extinction event, the environmental movement’s answer is to push for techno-fixes and band-aids. It's too little, too late.
Removed from the debate is the only thing that MIGHT save us: getting a grip on our out-of-control human presence and consumption. Why is this not THE issue? Because that would be bad for profits, bad for business. Have we environmentalists fallen for illusions, “green” illusions, that are anything but green, because we’re scared that this is the end—and we’ve pinned all our hopes on biomass, wind turbines, and electric cars?
No amount of batteries are going to save us, warns director Jeff Gibbs (lifelong environmentalist and co-producer of “Fahrenheit 9/11” and “Bowling for Columbine"). This urgent, must-see movie, a full-frontal assault on our sacred cows, is guaranteed to generate anger, debate, and, hopefully, a willingness to see our survival in a new way—before it’s too late.

My Mother/My Self: The Daughter's Search for Identity

by Nancy Friday
When Nancy Friday began her research for My Mother/My Self in the early 1970s, no work existed that explored the unique interaction between mother and daughter. Today psychotherapists throughout the world acknowledge that if women are to be able to love without possessing, to find work that fulfills them, and to discover their full sexuality, they must first acknowledge their identity as separate from their mother’s. Nancy Friday’s book played a major role in that acceptance. The greatest gift a good mother can give remains unquestioning love planted deep in the first year of life, so deep and unassailable that the tiny child grown to womanhood is never held back by the fear of losing that love, no matter what her own choice in love, sexuality, or work may be.

Through candid self-disclosure and hundreds of interviews, Friday investigates a generational legacy and reveals the conflicting feelings of anger, hate, and love the daughter’s hold for their mothers–and why they so often “become” that mother themselves.
The human journey
from mere animal existence

where rules imposed from without
are gradually supplanted
by principles from within.

Frank's question:
where do we go when our actual pedagogic dogma states
that the child must be totally "free", not subjected to rules ?
by Jane Hirshfield

On the fifth day
the scientists who studied the rivers
were forbidden to speak
or to study the rivers.

The scientists who studied the air
were told not to speak of the air,
and the ones who worked for the farmers
were silenced,
and the ones who worked for the bees.

Someone, from deep in the Badlands,
began posting facts.

The facts were told not to speak
and were taken away.
The facts, surprised to be taken, were silent.

Now it was only the rivers
that spoke of the rivers,
and only the wind that spoke of its bees,
while the unpausing factual buds of the fruit trees
continued to move toward their fruit.

The silence spoke loudly of silence,
and the rivers kept speaking,
of rivers, of boulders and air.

In gravity, earless and tongueless,
the untested rivers kept speaking.

Bus drivers, shelf stockers,
code writers, machinists, accountants,
lab techs, cellists kept speaking.

They spoke, the fifth day,
of silence.
