Plukrijp.be vzw – Upside-down the good newsletter
2022 – week 34
Upside down = instead of announcing what we plan to do
(& most often find out we do not need to do), we relate what we really did
Building communities of trust is fundamental
to healing our collective wound.
At Plukrijp, we offer spaces of transparency and solidarity.
The community allows people to encounter each other
in truth and so develop trust.
We do the garden for YOU
Plukrijp functions on your frequent visits & harvests. Take along for friends & neighbours, this way we recreate real networks between us all, breaking down the illusory restrictions that now still separate many of us from our fellow man = UBUNTU.
The updated list of vegetables & fruit that can be harvested this week is available on our website under the heading “Current Harvest” : https://plukrijp.be/en/op-dit-moment-te-oogsten
This week @ Plukrijp
Harry generously offered us his presence and his truck to pick up 25 large bags of woodchips from Mechelen. Many thanks Harry!
Martine transformed our delicious grapes into a juice that tastes and looks like nectar
We were charmed by the beautiful presence of Mark and Laura, two German volunteers who brought us a lot of joy. Laura cooked for us a zucchini cake with her grandmother’s recipe. The recipe is now in Plukrijp’s cookbook!
We were honored by the visit of Fanny who came from Austria and had to leave almost immediately to support her family. We are thinking of you Fanny very much. Thank you for the beauty of who you are.
Saturday morning, our basil was turned into pesto. The creativity was high in the kitchen: we experimented with nasturtiums, chervil, peas. Stunning creations have emerged. As we couldn’t wait to test it, the workshop was immediately followed by a large spaghetti with pesto. Jesus did a sorbet workshop and surprised us with a melon-nasturtium sorbet. A true delight!
Dug some profile pits with the auger to see what the drought has done to our soil.
Harvested more pumpkin, tomatoes, melons, grapes, beans, cucumber, zucchini, pickle… We also harvested some radishes straight from the plukpot even before planting them. So fast! Niels also harvested the first corns!
Harvested all the potatoes in open tunnel 2 and 3. We seeded corn salad in its place as well as in between the turnips in open tunnel 3.
Harvested the red beets at Hei
Weed all the closed tunnels and trimmed/thieved/clipped the tomatoes.
Weeded the salads in the glasshouse hotbed and the long low bed in between the cabbages.
Scratched the patches in between the fruit trees at Hei where a lot of spontaneous cabbage came up. There is a big clay layer there, so we want to scratch multiple times, throw compost and scratch that in to give the rye an advantage (rye helps us break the soil).
Weeded and scratched the first low long bed at Hei with the leek and took out a lot of spontaneous potatoes.
Weeded in between the ramenas and salads in open tunnel 1
Weeded the Brussels sprouts – chard lines at Hei
Seeded parsley, salad, chicorei in the glasshouse and gave water
Throw pigeon manure on the small compost heap to give it a kickstart
Snip the willows at Hei to allow more sunlight.
Mark taught Anthony the basics of electricity and together they fixed the line going to the caravans.
Alex passed on his welding knowledge to Anthony. Together they did a quick fix of the water tap next to the chicken coop. Welding: handy! Thank you Alex for bringing us this missing piece of knowledge!
Fix a lot of pallets
Thanks to David’s knowledge the hand pallet trucks get fixed. Some new hydraulic oil makes them run for another few years.
David and Ken helped us repair and maintenance the chainsaws. Ready for winter use!
Tribes, also known as The Soldier Who Declared Peace (UK), is a 1970 American drama film directed by Joseph Sargent.
A fresh-faced Jan-Michael Vincent plays a hippie drafted into the Marines who refuses to allow the War Machine that conflates militarism and patriotism to alter his life philosophy. His meditative and peaceful ways begin to profoundly affect his platoon and his drill sergeant before a more spiteful superior officer takes notice and cracks down hard on him.
The Benefit of Living With No Purpose – Alan Watts
Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a well-known British philosopher, writer and speaker, best known for his interpretation of Eastern philosophy for Western audiences. He left behind more than 25 books and an audio library of nearly 400 talks, which are still in great demand.
It is by accepting in advance that life will not always be easy that we can calmly cope with the challenges presented to us.
Change is Inevitable, Awareness is Eternal – Ram Dass
Ram Dass first went to India in 1967. He was still Dr. Richard Alpert, a prominent Harvard psychologist and psychedelic pioneer with Dr. Timothy Leary. He continued his psychedelic research until that fateful Eastern trip in 1967, when he traveled to India. In India, he met his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, affectionately known as Maharajji, who gave Ram Dass his name, which means “servant of God.” Everything changed then – his intense dharmic life started, and he became a pivotal influence on a culture that has reverberated with the words “Be Here Now” ever since. Ram Dass’ spirit has been a guiding light for three generations, carrying along millions on the journey, helping to free them from their bonds as he works through his own.
Since 1968, Ram Dass has pursued a panoramic array of spiritual methods and practices from potent ancient wisdom traditions, including bhakti or devotional yoga focused on the Hindu deity Hanuman; Buddhist meditation in the Theravadin, Mahayana Tibetan, and Zen Buddhist schools, and Sufi and Jewish mystical studies. Perhaps most significantly, his practice of karma yoga or spiritual service has opened up millions of other souls to their deep, yet individuated spiritual practice and path. Ram Dass continues to uphold the boddhisatva ideal for others through his compassionate sharing of true knowledge and vision. His unique skill in getting people to cut through and feel divine love without dogma is still a positive influence on many people from all over the planet.
The Dimming: Secret Weapon – Weather Manipulation
„Perhaps the greatest lie ever perpetrated on populations all over the world is the condensation trail lie. What we’re seeing in our skies is not condensation. It’s sprayed particulate dispersions.” But what for? “The only way we can expose and stop what’s going on up there in the sky is through a collective shift of consciousness », according the author of this documentary, Dane Wigington. You can also help to create a new awareness for the precious life on our planet and spread this broadcast widely.
What does the cymatic pattern of the Om-mantra look like? It’s not the Sri Yantra, as popularly claimed, but it is nonetheless truly beautiful to behold!
Terry Pratchett – Lords and Ladies
“Personal’s not the same as important. People just think it is.”
― Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies
“If cats looked like frogs we’d realize what nasty, cruel little bastards they are. Style. That’s what people remember.”
― Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies
Terry Pratchett’s incredibly funny twist on the Fair Folk, long gone. Each page had me belly laughing!
The way to gain purpose and meaning in life
is to devote yourself to a higher cause,
beyond your personal interests.
A cause that unfolds your unlimited power
– Meredith Forder
The Idea of Primitive Communism
By drawing a contrast between an angelic past and our greedy present, primitive communism blinds us to the true determinants of trust, freedom and equity. If we want to build better societies, the way forward is neither to live as hunter-gatherers nor to bang the drum of a make-believe state of nature. Rather, it is to work with humans as they are, warts and all.
Early Dawn by Ken Christiaens
This beautiful piece of calm music was composed by Ken Christiaens, one of our current volunteers.
Charlie Cunningham – Stuck
We discovered this singer during the Whisper festival at the Rivierenhof. His voice has an incredible warmth.

Once a rich man invited Nasreddin to dinner. He ordered his servant to bring in a variety of dishes. The servant brought in all the dishes that were ordered except for the figs.
– Before you go, the host said to Nasreddin, please read us a passage from the Koran to strengthen our spirits.
Nasreddin opened the Koran to a passage which begins: “By the figs and the olives and Mount Sinaï”.
– In the name of the most merciful God, recited Nasreddin, by the olives and Mount Sinaï…
His host interrupted him:
– Excuse me, you have forgotten “the figs”
– No, my friend, he replied, it is you that have forgotten the figs.
