This week @ Plukrijp

We did:

We cleaned out the grass in between the closed tunnels. We hope with a bit of scratching throughout the year we can keep it weed free.

We seeded low beans in the closed tunnels 2 and 3 in addition to carrots and parsnip at the Hei in the low long beds. Spinach and radish were used to mark the lines as they come up first. Corn salad was seeded in the food forest.

Delicious sprouts were harvested and consumed with immense pleasure. Thank you very much.

The pool has been retrofitted with new planks and given a layer of pigmented linseed oil. Summer, here we come!

The outside of open tunnel one near the grass field was given a cleanup. The pots will be seeded with flowers and are now near the food forest used as cover to suffocate the spreading hops.

We scratched closed tunnel one (where the chickens were) making the soil fine and level, ready for seeding.

We flooded the glasshouse and closed tunnel 2 and 3, as we do annually to start the season.

See you next week!

TED-Ed – What Zen Buddhist riddles reveal about knowledge and the unknowable

https://aeon.co/videos/what-zen-buddhist-riddles-reveal-about-knowledge-and-the-unknowable?utm_source=Aeon+Newsletter&utm_campaign=3797b96215-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_01_17_11_14&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_411a82e59d-3797b96215-70909647

Is seeking an explanation for life’s deepest mysteries a worthy pursuit? Many scientists and theologians would say yes. Zen Buddhists practising in China from the 9th to 13th centuries CE, however, believed that it was important to embrace uncertainty instead of always seeking answers. For these monks, achieving enlightenment meant resisting the urge to know the seemingly unknowable. To foster this way of thinking, they meditated on paradoxical riddles called kōans to raise doubts about the very meaning of knowing and, through this, find deeper truths about existence. This playful animation from TED-Ed provides a brief history of kōans, and offers two rich examples from the roughly 1,700 kōans written to illustrate the key role of ambiguity on the path to enlightenment.

Getting annoyed, frustrated or sad – these are all normal feelings. But we often allow ourselves to get consumed in the negativity. Why do we hold things against people? Why do we judge? Why do we not forgive?  We forget that we’re all flawed – no one is perfect. When we recognise this, we can start to practice kindness and learn how to love these imperfections in everyone we meet. Kindness displaces rudeness, criticism and anger. And by cultivating more kindness, to ourselves and others, we start to experience how the darker parts of life become illuminated by love. In doing so, we open the door to calmer acceptance of ourselves and of others. And we’re also able to enjoy the journey of life, in the company of friends, with more gratitude and forgiveness.

Weaving a bamboo house

How the Dorze in Ethiopia make ‘beehive’ houses from bamboo that last a lifetime

https://aeon.co/videos/how-the-dorze-in-ethiopia-make-beehive-houses-from-bamboo-that-last-a-lifetime?utm_source=Aeon+Newsletter&utm_campaign=4c07b546e7-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_03_17_03_04&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_411a82e59d-4c07b546e7-70909647

On the Nomadic Architecture YouTube channel, the UK architect Gordon Clarke chronicles how people across the globe use ancient traditions and local resources to construct sustainable houses that suit their needs. In this instalment, he captures the Dorze people of the Gamo highlands in southern Ethiopia as they build bamboo houses that, with a good deal of maintenance, are intended to last residents a lifetime. Starting with raw bamboo, the Dorze builders split and weave the material into a sturdy structure that looks like a beehive. The huts are then thatched with a layer of straw and finished with an outer layer of bamboo sheath. Construction takes teams of three to four craftsmen roughly two weeks to complete. The process is notable not just for the eye-catching final structures that result, but also for its elegant simplicity, requiring lots of bamboo – even the ladders and scaffolding are built from it – some very simple tools, and craftsmanship skills refined over generations.

One genial extra note: since the Dorze know that the termites will inevitably attack the house from below, they built it so high that ik can descend over the next 70 years en still be usefull. Frank calls this ecological durability: i.e. building while taking into account the environment.

The farmer as doctor of the future: in conversation with Peter Vanhoof

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UOGRIcfgVE

The agricultural sector in the Netherlands has been under discussion for many years. Sustainability, animal welfare, nitrogen deposition; All of these are essential challenges that, in practice, however, often look very different from the paper reality portrayed by government authorities.

Peter Vanhoof is a specialist in exactly this practice and works with farmers internationally to tackle the core problems. Sven talks to him about his experiences on the farms, his research into soil and drinking water and how important it is to keep seeing all things connected for a sustainable future.

You can find Peter Vanhoof via his website https://www.organic-forest.eu/nl-menu, here you can view more video material and also the discussed research results from 2019.

Gnosis I-III by Boris Mouravieff

https://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/esp_autor_mouravieff.htm

Boris Mouravieff was an enigmatic ‘third man’, known to Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, who found and learned to practise what he clearly believed to be the complete system of which only fragtments had been previously published in Ouspensky’s works.

The three volumes of Boris Mouravieff ‘s Gnosis describe the inner doctrines of Eastern Christianity: Volume I the exoteric teaching – Volume II the practical or mesoteric teaching – Volume III the truly esoteric

Please keep in mind that Gnosis in this context does not refer to the second century texts about ‘Gnosticism’. This is a previously not published ancient Christian knowledge tradition.

Gnosis does more than simply explore the mysterious relation between the ‘Fourth Way’ and the little known ‘Royal Way’ of Eastern Orthodoxy; it forms a modern primer in the knowledge tradition of the early church, and gives practical instruction in methods of spirituality for serious seekers.

Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals

Phaedrus – a character familiar to readers of ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ – is sailing down the Hudson River when he meets Lila Blewitt, an unapologetically sexual, psychologically unstable woman whom a mutual friend warns him against. But Phaedrus is drawn to her physically, and interested in her intellectually, finding her a culture of one in whom he discerns an unexpected Quality. Sailing with him to Manhattan, where her mental state deteriorates further, Lila promps Phaedrus to explore conflicts of values, such as those between Native Americans and Europeans, or between the insane and the normal.

Extract:

What the Divine Mother is now birthing in all those open to her is a vision of total relationship between heart, mind, body, and soul, so that through that deep sacred relationship, we can come into the unified force field of reality, become completely embodied and present, and use that inner love to express our longing to see the world transformed. What is really at stake is this: If we continue to have a vision of relationship as purely personal, purely private, and something that we cultivate only for our own pleasure, we will keep feeding the tragic narcissism that is now ravaging the planet on every level.

The real thrust and purpose and meaning and divine importance of relationship is to give us the fuel to take on the world, the energy to keep on pouring ourselves out for the creation of a new world. It is critical to remember that this crisis we are facing is a crisis in which the sacred powers of love in the human soul are being diverted by distraction, by greed, by ignorance, by the pursuit of power, so that they never irrigate the world and transform it. What is needed is a vision of evolutionary relationship as a relationship that helps us come into the real, take responsibility for it, and enact our sacred purpose with a partner, and for the world: when two lovers come together in this dynamic love consciousness, they create a transformative field of sacred energy, from which both can feed to inspire their work in reality.

Both beings need to be plunged individually into a deep and passionate devotion of the Beloved [Divine], by whatever name they know the Beloved, because without both beings centering their life in God, the relationship will never be able to escape the private circle. From the very beginning it must be centered in the Divine. It must be a relationship that is undertaken in the coscious presence of the Divine for the Divine’s great work in the Universe. Only a relationship that is centered in God, and that has God as the prime actor in the relationship, will be able to bear the vicissitudes of authentic love, of dealing with the challenges of life and service in the world.”

Inspiring Texts

The German poet Friedrich Schiller, who was shaped by the global republican movement that spread in the wake of the American Revolution asked in his Aesthetical Letters (1794) “how is the artist to protect himself against the corruption of the age that besets him on all sides? By disdaining its opinion.” If the masses are debased to believe that poison is their drug, then how could a true artist cater to their desires, no matter how popular? To do this requires an extremely advanced moral disposition since both money and fame must be sacrificed in order to challenge a society to become better. Schiller said that for one to be committed to truth and its corollary Freedom in the highest pursuit of Beauty, an artist had to find a way to balance existing in space and time, but always strive to transcend their temporal society’s limitations in a constant search for the eternal. In his sixth letter Schiller wrote:

No doubt the artist is the child of his time, but unhappy for him if he is its disciple or even its favorite! He will, indeed, receive his matter from the present time, but he will borrow the form from a nobler time and even beyond all time, from the essential, absolute, immutable unity. There, issuing from the pure ether of its heavenly nature, flows the source of all beauty, which was never tainted by the corruptions of generations or of ages, which roll along far beneath it in dark eddies.”

Schiller’s thoughts were not written in an ivory tower, but were driven by his leading efforts as a playwright, poet and founder of a field of research known as the Science of Universal History. Although his life was short, he not only left an incredible opus that inspired some of the most noble works of music such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Verdi’s operas, he also directly shaped a network of other artists, scientists and statesmen through the Weimar Renaissance such as both Humboldt brothers and Wolfgang Goethe to name a few.

3 Agreements You Made Before Reincarnating on Earth

written by Kimberly Fosu on Medium.com

1- You Agreed to Forget

You had a sit down with your spirit team and mapped out the entire plan for your life. You went over all the things you got right in your previous life and all the lessons you still needed to learn. But the thing was, you had to forget all of it. You had to forget and start life all over again without the baggage from past lives hanging over your head, affecting and influencing your every move. It was all so you could have a new life experience and make new and better choices.

As you entered the earthly plane, you went through a veil that made you forget everything that had happened behind the veil. Under the veil of forgetfulness, you forgot the contract you signed. You forgot your soul family and spirit team, and you forgot your true identity. You also forgot all the things you said you would do.

But you didn’t come to earth empty-handed. You were given bits and pieces of memories that would reveal themselves to you along the way. These memories would help you remember who you really were and the work you came here to do. You had to forget and start life all over again without the baggage from past lives hanging over your head, affecting and influencing your every move.

2- You Agreed to Remember

Life is a test and during a test, the teacher is silent and you must figure it out on your own. Until you got it right, learn your lessons and did all the things you agreed you would do, you’d return to retake the test. The only thing you had to help you figure it out were the memories embedded in your soul that would reveal themselves to you when you were ready.

These memories would reveal themselves through déjà vus, intuition or inner voice, and phobias, through members of your soul family who incarnated with you and through spiritual teachers that are placed on your path. You could also find answers through your own search for meaning.

You were given gifts, talents, treasures and abilities to use for the betterment of humanity. You agreed to remember you had those gifts and abilities and use them to fulfil your soul’s mission. You were entrusted with this mission. You were asked if you could do it. You were told you would forget it all and it would be hard. You were told about all the distractions that would be there. You said yes, you could and could be trusted. Your job was to remember the mission you were entrusted with. While you had forgotten, it was still a part of you. When your soul saw that you were ready, it would wake you up for a spiritual awakening that would open your eyes to the truth about yourself and the universe which would help you remember what you came to do.

You would forget and there would be many distractions, but your job was to remember who you are, your gifts and abilities, and use them to help others through your mission.

3- You Agreed to Evolve

Your soul is eternal, and its purpose in every lifetime is to grow and evolve. A soul that does not remember its true identity remains distracted in the world and fails to do the things it agreed to do. There are many things the soul does to evolve. You knew that life would sometimes suck, and you agreed to remain conscious of the meanings you assign to the things that happen to you.

Anything you experience in your life is basically neutral. Whatever you experience here is only positive or negative because you say it is.

How you define an event would determine your emotions and your thoughts about it. The minute you look at an event and assign it meaning, you infuse it with emotion. And your emotions are just energy in motion which drives your actions. The meaning you give to situations determines the emotional tone of that experience and the feelings you generate.

What you knew to do was to have a positive outlook on life and infuse positive meaning into the things that happen. As you grow and are able to control your thoughts and emotions, your soul evolves, since the soul is the ruler of the mind, emotions, and willpower. Anything you do to improve your mind, control your emotions and strengthen your willpower causes your soul to evolve. Once your soul evolves, you pass the test and you move on to the next assignment. The more your soul evolves, the easier it is to continue to work on your soul’s purpose and fulfil your soul mission.

The Moth Orchid

Not only is the Phalaenopsis orchid a stunning shade of fuchsia, it also looks like a bird nesting within a wall of petals, though some have compared it to a moth in flight. In fact, the flower’s scientific name may be a reference to the genus Phalaena, which describes a certain species of moth. (Photos: Christian Kneidinger, José Roberto Rodrigues Araújo)
